What is Medicare Part D?

Starting January 1, 2006, you will get most of your drugs by using Medicare Part D.
Medicaid will still pay for some drugs.

 

How Do I Get Medicare Part D?

If you don’t pick a drug plan, you will get a letter in the mail telling you what plan you are in.

What is the Name of My New Medicare Part D Plan?

The letter you get in the mail will tell you the name of your new Medicare Part D drug plan.
The plan name is one of the plans listed below.

Can I Change My Medicare Part D Plan?

On January 1, 2006, you will get a new Medicare Part D drug plan to help you pay for your drugs at the drug store.

You can change plans at any time. Plan changes are for the first of the following month.

You will need to call your current plan to tell them you are changing to a different drug plan. Then call the new plan you want to enroll in.

You can also call Medicare at 1-800-633-4227 to change your Medicare Part D drug plan.

 

If I Have Medicaid, Will I have to Pay for Medicare Part D?

You will have to pay:

  • $0 for your monthly drug plan premium

  • $0 for your yearly drug plan deductible

You will pay a co-pay when you get your drug at the drug store:

$1.00 or $2.00 for generic drugs
$3.00 or $5.00 for brand name drugs

Single people with a monthly income below $797.50 will pay a $1 or $3 co-pay.
Anyone with a monthly income over $797.50 will pay a $2 or $5 co-pay.
You may not have a co-pay if you live in a nursing home.

 

Can I Still Use My Rhode Island Medicaid Card for Drugs?

You can use your Rhode Island Medicaid card for some drugs. Use your
Rhode Island Medicaid card for:

  • Medicaid covered barbiturates (ie., phenobarbital)

  • Medicaid covered benzodiazepines (ie., diazepam)

  • Medicaid covered cough and cold drugs (ie., guaifenesin syrup)

  • Medicaid covered vitamins (ie, once daily multiple vitamins)

  • Medicaid covered over the counter drugs ( ie., metamucil, maalox, acetaminophen)

  • Medicaid covered Agents for Weight Loss (ie., phentermine)

There is a $0 fee for these drugs at the drug store.
